Recapping Project Pedal Power: Transforming Donated Bikes into Freedom, Confidence, and Joy for Local Youth

When Adam Santos of Adam’s Junk Removal approached Neighborhood Vitality Corp’s (NVC) Executive Director, Kandice Kershaw, about his Project Pedal Power idea earlier this summer, she knew our team at NVC would love to be part of it. The goal of Project Pedal Power was simple yet ambitious: "Pedal Fast. Dream Big." We believe that every child deserves the health, independence, and sheer magic that comes with owning a bicycle.

Thanks to an incredible community response, dedicated volunteer hours, and powerful partnerships, most notably with Adam's Junk Removal, that vision didn't just come to life; it rolled into neighborhoods across Poughkeepsie and Beacon, changing lives one pedal rotation at a time.

Here’s a look back at how Project Pedal Power unfolded, from a bold idea to a community-wide movement.

The Call to Action: "Donate a Bike, Empower a Child"

In early June, NVC and Adam’s Junk Removal launched the Project Pedal Power collection drive. Many families have bicycles sitting unused in garages or basements—gently used bikes that children have outgrown.

Partnering with Adam Santos and the team at Adam's Junk Removal, we offered free doorstep pickups throughout the region to make donating effortless. Adam and his crew collected, hauled, and prepared bicycles of all sizes—children’s, teens', and tricycles—making sure every single donated bike was ride-ready and safe.

We provide more than bikes—we build confidence, safety, and community.

Distribution Days: Poughkeepsie & Beacon Highlights

The culmination of Project Pedal Power took place over two major weekend distribution events filled with excitement, safety clinics, and smiling faces.

Kids didn't just pick out a bike. They were fitted with brand-new, certified helmets and guided through interactive obstacle courses to learn safe riding habits.

Classroom & Community Connection: Visiting Warring Elementary

After the Poughkeepsie event, NVC was approached by Warring Elementary School in the Poughkeepsie City School District to participate in their back-to-school event. NVC and Adam’s Junk Removal gladly accepted the invitation. At the back-to-school event, we raffled off 2 brand new bicycles to 2 students.

Full Circle: Overcoming Obstacles & Seeing the Vision Through

Organizing a large-scale community initiative comes with immense logistical challenges, long hours, and unexpected hurdles. Refurbishing dozens of bikes, coordinating free pickups, managing logistics, and securing safety gear requires relentless effort.

In a heartfelt message reflecting on the project's conclusion, Adam Santos shared that there were moments along the way where the challenge felt overwhelming. There were times when giving up crossed his mind. But seeing the smiles of children receiving their very first bicycle, strapping on a fresh helmet, and taking off down the path brought everything full circle.

The grit behind the scenes paled in comparison to the joy brought to local families. Project Pedal Power proved what is possible when community members refuse to quit on local youth.
